As in Florence and other parts of Tuscany, the first signs of civilisation started with the birth of the Etruscans, a race believed to have derived from the Middle East, who developed agriculture and the iron industry, conquering the central region of Italy with their iron weapons. Today evidence of settlements and memorial stones have been found in the nearby archaeolological sites of Frascole and Fiesole.

Florence was founded during the Roman Age and this period is reflected today in the names of places and the way villages and towns were built around a rural church, “la pieve”.
During the Middle Ages the economical and political success of Florence through trade and finance encouraged the building of large castles, villas and country houses by wealthy families living in Florence and the rural areas known as the “contado” were cultivated by the peasants and farmers, supplying the area with wheat, olive oil and wine. These farmers lived in houses similar to Podere Torremozza, with their own fortified stone towers, archways and covered terraces and it is believed that Podere Torremozza was built around 1465 and was part of the Estate and Convent of Santa Margherita di Tosina whose origins date back to the 12th Century.

Farmhouse

The share-cropping system of farming, ”mezzadria” was very common and survived until the 1950’s when it was legally abolished. During the 18th and 19th Centuries, social and economical changes took place and the small villages expanded to become municipalities.

During the 20th Century radical changes meant that most of the farming population left the countryside to go and work in industry in the city and these farmhouses and rural buildings were abandoned but some have been restored and transformed into private holiday houses.
