Monastery and Nature Reserve of Vallombrosa. The monastery founded in 1036 is still in use today and the monks conduct guided visits. The impressive nature reserve with acres of age old fir and beech trees has numerous marked trails to explore, popular with the Florentine people at the weekend. Nearby restaurants serve local specialities such as Porcini mushrooms and truffles.
Just over the Consuma pass you will enter the Casentino Valley with picturesque villages nestled in the surrounding hills, to name but a few Stia with it’s beautiful arched piazza. Poppi with it’s castle rich in history, residence of the Conti Guidi family who dominated this region between the 12 and 15th Centuries. Set deep in the Casentino National Park is the Francescano sanctuary of La Verna and the closed hermitage of Camaldoli where the monks abide by the rule of silence.
